Qype: The Northern Monkey Leeds in Leeds

Leeds - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars - Pubs

Pretty good... for a pub on the Headrow! Decent food (big portions), friendly staff and sport on the telly.

Qype: Salts in Leeds

Leeds - Shopping - Food & Drink - Delicatessen

Salt's is a great little deli with sandwiches to die for! They also do some really nice cakes and hot food. The only downside is that there is no seating and the coffee isn't anything to write home about. - But the delicious sandwiches make up for it!

Leeds - Eating & Drinking - Cafes & Coffee Shops - Coffee Shops

Definitely the best coffee in Leeds.

I really appreciate a good coffee - and I've found that good coffees are very few and far between in the UK.

If you're in Leeds and you understand how good coffees should be, make sure you grab one from Opposite!

Qype: Karachi Restaurant in Bradford

Bradford - Eating & Drinking - Fastfood & Takeaway - Indian

I had high hopes for this place after hearing nothing but good reviews. The curries were good (except for one bite of gristle... yuk) and reasonably priced. And the mango lassi was sublime.

But I wasn't blown away.

Qype: City Red in Leeds

Leeds

I absolutely cannot recommend this estate agent. I am a tenant and they are by far the worst estate agent I have ever dealt with.

They send text messages, immediately before disconnecting their phones, to say your home will be viewed the next day. Even when you have phoned them a thousand times and asked that they CALL you in advance of a viewing... and that they CALL you just before arriving for a viewing - they never will. Even if they say that they have "made a note to call you" they never will. And even if you ask them to remove you from their text message list, they never will.

And god help you if you need repairs. I had to wait weeks - and in the end the plumber never came back to finalise the job! The leak was is fixed - but if I was the owner I'd be quite annoyed that the plumber didn't come back to stick my bathroom back together properly!

You have been warned!

Qype: Pin in Leeds

Leeds - Eating & Drinking - Pubs & Bars

PIN for breakfast, lunch and dinner (okay fine breakfast, dinner and tea) - it's all good!

BREAKFAST - Just the right amount of grease on your Full English. Yum.

LUNCH - It doesn't get much better than the £6 lunch deal. Filling and tasty sangas and a nice local pint.

DINNER - Great fish and chips!

Note: I wouldn't recommend sharing the sharing pie. It isn't quite big enough for two!

Qype: distrikt in Leeds

Leeds - Eating & Drinking - Restaurants - Mediterranean

Don’t believe the hype. Sorry folks, but District was a terrible disappointment.

A group of five of us decided to try this place out – on a Wednesday (half price tapas if you’re interested). We ordered just about everything on the tapas menu, plus some claypots and overpriced dips.

Our waiter told us from the outset that the claypots would take a little longer.

‘Well that’s fine,’ I thought, ‘at least they’re freshly made on site’.

The tapas arrived and they were pretty good. I wasn’t blown away by the very hairy chicken wings, but everything else was tasty enough.

An hour and 15 minutes later, we were still waiting on two claypots (one lamb and one veggie).

Finally, after some gentle reminders, they came out. ...And they were terribly disappointing.

The vegetable claypot was bland but edible.

The lamb claypot was a disaster. The chunks of meat were dry and chewy. And to top it off, half of the vegetables were stone cold. This one was sent back to the kitchen.

Initially our waiter, who had been good and attentive all night, apologised and took it back.

When he returned, he became belligerent and talked himself out of a tip. He said that in the kitchen he saw another lamb claypot and it was steaming hot with tender meat.

What were we supposed to say to that? ‘Good for whoever ordered that one? Because the one we were served was atrocious and there was no way it was in the oven for an hour?’

Such a shame. I won’t be back.

Clarence Dock: Another one bites the dust

It's been such a shame to witness the demise of Clarence Dock. When I first moved to Leeds (quite close to the dock), I thought 'Great! There's lots of cool shops at Clarence Dock, how convenient'...

But it seems that every month another business goes bust at the dock.

Much of the office space is deserted.

The very promising Rock Couture was one of the first stores to give it up many months ago. It was a huge loss for Leeds fashinistas and bargain hunters alike. Its closure was closely followed by the withdrawal of Starbucks (not such a shame) and now G Star Raw. And I'm sure the others aren't far behind.

Disappointment.

Little Tokyo, Leeds

Little Tokyo is one of my favourite restaurants in Leeds - and one of the few Japanese options.

It's consistently great. I haven't had a single dish that I could say a bad word about. And the bento boxes are good value.

A word of advice: Try the tempura avocado - and be prepared to get addicted. It's to die for. And it's what brings me back time and time again. YUM!
